It’s the cutest Valentine’s Day treat ever!

Tell loved ones, or your crushes, exactly how you feel with these customizable cut-out cookies. Cut out the heart cookies and add your message. It’s the cutest Valentine’s Day dessert ever! After all, it wouldn’t be Valentine’s Day without conversation heart candies. But real talk; they are a wee bit of an acquired taste. But you know what everyone loves? Cookies! These Conversation Heart Cookies are super easy to make so even if you don’t have a ton of cookie decorating experience, like me, you should be able to nail these just in time for Valentine’s Day.

Conversation Hearts Cookies

Conversation Hearts Cookies

Prep Time: 5 minutes
Cook Time: 25 minutes
Additional Time: 5 minutes
Total Time: 35 minutes


  • 4 cups flour, sifted
  • 1/3 cup corn starch
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 eggs at room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 5 egg whites
  • 4 cups of sifted powdered sugar
  • 1/8 teaspoon lemon juice
  • Food gel colors of your choice


  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees and prepare your cookie sheets with parchment paper.

Heart Shaped CookiesSift your the flour, corn starch and salt in a large bowl. Give it a whisk.

  1. In your standing mixer fitted with a paddle attachment, cream the butter and sugar together.
  2. Add the eggs while mixing. Scrape down sides of the bowl.
  3. Add 1 tsp vanilla extract.
  4. Pour in the flour mixture and mix until everything is well incorporated.
  5. Put the dough in a plastic bag, flatten it together, then chill it in the refrigerator so it firms up.
  6. Once the dough is chilled, place it on a rolling mat, sprinkle with flour and roll out with a rolling pin. Move the dough around so to prevent it from sticking.
  7. With a heart shaped cookie cutter sized to your preference, cut out your cookies. I would suggest just sprinkling on sugar once cookies have been placed on your cookie sheet for baking.
  8. Place them on a non-stick baking sheet and bake at 375F for 12 minutes.

Royal Icing

  1. In a mixing bowl, whisk your egg whites and vanilla until frothy.
  2. Add in your sifted powdered sugar, 1/4 cup at a time, mixing well after each addition until you have your desired consistency.
  3. In the middle of adding your powdered sugar, add in a few drops of lemon juice to really brighten your royal icing.
  4. Portion out 1 cup of royal icing and mix with 1/2 cup powdered sugar. This will be your thicker royal icing that will be used to pipe a boarder onto each cookie and your conversation messages.
  5. Split your thinner royal icing into three bowls and color with a few drops of food gel color of your choosing. I'm using yellow, purple, and a very like violet.


  1. Once your cookies have cooled, pipe on a white boarder with your thickened royal icing. Allow your boarders to dry for about 5 minutes.
  2. Using your colored royal icing batches, flood each cookie with your desired cookies. I like to use zigzag lines and fill in the gaps with a toothpick.
  3. When your colored royal icing has set for another 5 minutes, grab your thicker icing and being to pipe on your conversation messages. Feel free to get fully creative here and use phrases such as "HUG ME", "XOXO", SWIPE LEFT", "MY BOO", "DM ME", "HUGS", or any other of your favorite conversation heart messages.


  • Room Temperature Ingredients: Be sure to allow your dairy ingredients to reach room temperature. Room temperature ingredients not only combine more effortlessly (no over-mixing needed) but they also trap air so much better. This trap air will expand and produce a fluffy texture during your baking process.
  • Prepared Pan: There will always be the "next best way to prepare your pan" article. Simply put however, the most effective way i find in my kitchen is a light rub of shortening around the sides, parchment paper on the bottom of the pan (for majority of baking pans), & a very light dusting of flour (cocoa powder for chocolate baked goods) all throughout.
  • Chill the dough: The dough is sticky once it’s all beaten together in your mixing bowl and so it is really best to have your dough chilled for at least 3 hours. Give yourself enough time in the kitchen or make the cookie dough and chill it overnight. You want your cookie dough firm so the cookies hold their shape and you want your cookie dough manageable so you can work with it. You won’t have either unless you have chilled cookie dough.
